Postal Exam 230/238/240

This is the most unusual of all Postal tests because these three exams are identical and they aren’t really exams in the first place. These exams and the jobs they fill are recapped below:

Exam 230 — Motor Vehicle Operator
Exam 238 — Motor Vehicle Operator / Tractor Trailer Operator
Exam 240 — Tractor Trailer Operator

Rather than traditional tests, these exams are actually identical questionnaires that ask about the applicant’s driving record and experience. The Postal Service somehow converts your questionnaire answers into a numerical score, but they will not share any information on how this is done.

The questionnaire topics are listed below:

  • Number of drug, alcohol, or other controlled substance driving offense convictions in the past 5 years.
  • Number of hit and run convictions in the last 5 years.
  • Number of reckless or careless driving convictions in the past 5 years.
  • Number of fatal accidents judged to be your fault. (Note: There is not a stated number of years for this topic. They want to know about all such accidents no matter when they happened.)
  • Number of driver’s license suspensions in the last 3 years.
  • Number of driver’s license revocations in the last 5 years.
  • Number of accidents judged to be your fault in the last 5 years.
  • Number of traffic/driving offenses (moving violations) in the past 3 years.
  • Number of traffic/driving offenses (moving violations) in the last year.
  • Years of driving experience with passenger cars or larger vehicles.
  • Months of full-time experience driving a 7 or more ton truck, tractor-trailer, or 16 or more passenger bus. (Note: This item asks for months of experience, not years.)
  • Months of full time experience driving a 7 or more ton truck, tractor-trailer, or a 16 or more passenger bus within the past 7 years. (Note: This item is identical to the one above except that it asks for months of experience within the past 7 years.)
  • Months of full-time experience driving a tractor-trailer. (Note: This item asks for months of experience, not years.)
  • Months of full-time experience driving a tractor-trailer within the past 7 years. (Note: This item is identical to the one above except that it asks for months of experience within the past 7 years.)
